Betrayed

Image
Jesus journeyed relentlessly toward Jerusalem, where he, “the Son of Man,” would be arrested, tried, and executed – Mark 10:32-34. Jesus is “ on the way ” to Jerusalem in the  Gospel of Mark , where his enemies will kill him, but he will sacrifice his life on behalf of his people. The theme of Christ’s relentless journey to his death is repeated in Mark , beginning with John the Baptist, the forerunner who came to “ prepare the way of the Lord .”

Leap for joy!

Persecution is always a possibility for the followers of Jesus and his Church. We may face hostility from employers, neighbors, government, and family members because of our beliefs and practices. So, how should we react when the possibility becomes a brutal reality? Jesus and the Apostles provided clear instructions and examples of how the Church must respond when faced with persecution.

Carrying His Cross

Retaliation and violence are not appropriate reactions to hostility and persecution for the disciples of Jesus. Instead, they must meet threats and assaults with humility, mercy, and forgiveness. This is what it means to “ deny yourself ,” “ take up his cross ,” and follow him “ wherever he leads .” Doing good to one’s “ enemy ” is contrary to the “ wisdom of this age ,” yet doing so is how we become “ perfect as the Heavenly Father .”

Mercy and Enemies

When we react to hostility with hostility and anger, Satan wins .  The reality of persecution raises questions. How should we respond when attacked by the State, the culture, society, or even our family and friends? Is resorting to anger or retaliation appropriate, or should we emulate examples from the life of Jesus? In his teachings, he warned us to expect “ tribulation ,” and he summoned us to follow his path (“ If they persecuted me, so they will persecute you ”).

An End Time People

The Assembly of God is the battlefield where the final war is being waged between the Lamb and the Ancient Serpent, the Devil . The  Book of Revelation  is addressed to seven first-century congregations in the Roman province of Asia. It deals with their real-life situations and trials. In the process, it presents messages relevant to all the assemblies of God throughout the present age, the period known as the “ Last Days ” which began following Calvary. The daily struggles of the Asian churches provide a microcosm of the great cosmic battle that is being waged between Jesus and the Devil.

Afflicted Disciples

Image
Our natural tendency is to avoid conflict. Understandably, we prefer lives characterized by peace, acceptance, prosperity, and devoid of difficulties and afflictions. The New Testament does promise believers peace now and everlasting life later. Nevertheless, it also teaches us to expect trials and persecution in this life because of our testimony before the world.

Cost of Discipleship

Image
Being a disciple of Jesus requires us to embrace and carry the Cross and follow the same path he walked, even if it results in death - Mark 6:7-30. Jesus sent his Twelve Disciples to proclaim God’s Kingdom throughout the region. In the Gospel of Mark , his instructions to the disciples are followed by the execution of John the Baptist. His death prepares us for the rejection that results whenever anyone chooses to follow Jesus, but he must first count the cost to have any hope of completing the journey.

Arrest and Fulfillment

Image
Jesus began to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God in Galilee following the arrest of John the Baptist, an incident that foreshadowed the opposition he would face throughout his mission. In the end, resistance to his efforts culminated in his own arrest, trial, and execution in Jerusalem. His message brought fulfillment but also adversity. Unlike the prophets of old, his work did  NOT  begin or center in Jerusalem, though it certainly ended there - (Matthew 4:13).
